ON THIS DATE IN AIRBORNE HISTORY: 14 MAR 1941
The 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment was originally constituted on 14 March 1941 as the 504th Parachute Infantry Battalion (PIB) at Fort Benning, GA. The unit would later evolve into the 509th PIR and would become the first American unit to jump in combat, in Operation Torch in North Africa.
