The 502d Parachute Infantry Battalion was activated at Fort Benning under the command of Major George P. Howell.
The 502d was the 2nd airborne battalion formed in the US Army. The battalion would evolve into the 502d PIR in 1942 and then join the 101st Airborne Division.
